New Year Brings Change

It’s a new year again. Funny how those things sneak up on us every year. I love how life presents us with cycles. One of the things I absolutely love about living in New England is how the seasons march us through the year. I’m one of those people that craves change and, as only us Mainers can attest to, if you don’t like the weather in Maine . . . .just wait a minute!

With a new year beginning, many of you may be experiencing change or a beginning of some kind professionally. My personal change quotient is off the charts; it invigorates and energizes me. Some people, I’m married to one of them, dread change and would rather eat the same chicken dish at the same restaurant for years.   The predictability is what invigorates them (or at least that’s what I’m told).

How do you know if you need a change? Maybe start with a few questions:

  • What am I passionate about?
  • What excites me?
  • What bores me to death?
  • What am I unhappy with?
  • What are my goals in life or business?

Personally, I’ve found myself in roles with companies and situations that were not integrated will with who I am. Imagine me, with my hunger for innovation and change, hunting for typos in 100 page legal documents. Yup. I spent 8 plus hours a day, scanning every numbered line in massive legal documents looking for errors. And what’s worse? When I found them, I couldn’t even fix them. I just had to document the document and line number and highlight the mistake!! The job wasn’t hard for me but it definitely was hard on me.

As the new year starts, and if you have to ask just one question, maybe it could be: “What are some things that I would be really excited to do that might not be easy for me but would be easy on me?”

I’m super excited about my new year and that I get to do this job! Working with small businesses and non-profits to help them change and grow to achieve their goals is incredibly satisfying and much more engaging to me than hunting for a misspelled latin word in a legal document.
